Protect Yourself, Others & Your Equipment with Spraying Best Practices
Working around chemicals, spray equipment or heavy machinery is no joke and should never be taken lightly. With spraying season in full swing, and an increase in antiviral spraying efforts, here are a few tips for protecting yourself, others around you, and your equipment. Best practices in spraying also increase efficiency and effectiveness. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!Â
5 Tips for Ensuring Safety When Spraying
These best practices will keep you safe not only now, but down the road.
1.) Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
We get it, long sleeve shirts, long pants, coveralls, boots, and gloves can be cumbersome and uncomfortable, especially considering weather conditions. Protective gear is by no means comfortable, but it is meant to keep you safe. While you don't necessarily have to wear layer after layer of clothing, wearing clothes that fit properly and cover exposed skin will help. Eyewear, a face mask, a hat and often a respirator are must haves in your arsenal of protective gear. Even the most steady hand can't prevent the occasional splash or spray drift.Â
2.) Read the Product Label
Reading chemical labels is often overlooked, especially if you've been working with pesticides and herbicides for a while. However, we want to stress the importance of reading a product label to determine appropriate handling and application. Always use the right amount of product given your application to avoid waste and unnecessary contamination. This will also help avoid chemical run-off that may pose a health risk to you and others.Â
3.) Ensure Proper Training
Operators should be properly trained not only on effective application, but also to avoid any mishaps from incorrect handling of the sprayer. Make sure that anyone in contact with the sprayer and chemicals has been trained and understands the importance of working in a safe manner. Proper use of the sprayer and spray equipment ensures better and more cost effective application - keeping you safe and saving time and money.
Sprayer Depot is a proud sponsor of PAPA Seminars (Pesticide Applicators Professional Association). PAPA offers education pertaining to the safe and effective use of pest control techniques. Look to PAPA or another training and education organization for tools and resources for working with spraying chemicals.
4.) Select the Right Equipment
The right equipment is key to not only safety, but effectiveness and efficiency in spraying. Sprayers are designed for specific uses. Some types can cross-over, while others do not. The same goes for spray guns, tips & nozzles. If you need help selecting the right equipment for the specific type of spraying you're doing, feel free to contact our knowledgeable customer service technicians. They are available weekdays to answer your questions.

5.) Health Awareness - Know the Signs & Symptoms of Exposure
In addition to reading and following chemical labels, it's important to know the signs and symptoms of exposure, and what to do about it. Ensure that anyone working with you or for you also knows these signs, symptoms, and treatment steps.Â
